Elastic Modulus (EV2)

Plate-loading measurement of soil and subgrade stiffness from the second loading cycle.

Overview

The EV2 modulus is derived from the second loading cycle of a plate load test and is widely used to check the stiffness and compaction of subgrade and embankment layers against specified minimum values.

The plate-load modulus EV2 comes from the second loading cycle of a plate test on a subgrade or embankment layer. It measures stiffness, and together with the first-cycle value it indicates how well the layer has been compacted, before the next layer is placed on top.

  • Second-cycle plate load modulus
  • Stiffness and compaction verification
  • Used for subgrade and embankment layers
  • Field test with immediate results

Key Benefits

Verifies compaction

Confirms the layer meets the stiffness the design assumed.

Immediate results

The test is done on site with results the same day.

Protects the pavement

A firm subgrade extends pavement life.

Simple acceptance criterion

Clear pass/fail against the specified modulus.

Where It Is Used

  • Highway and rural road subgrades
  • Railway formations
  • Embankments and fill layers
  • Airfield and industrial yard pavements

How We Work

  1. 1

    Prepare the test spot

Level a small area of the compacted layer.

  2. 2

    Place the plate and jack

Set the plate against a reaction vehicle with a hydraulic jack.

  3. 3

    Load, unload and reload

Two cycles, recording settlement at each stage.

  4. 4

    Calculate the modulus

Determine EV1 and EV2 and the ratio between them.

What You Receive

  • Load-settlement curves
  • EV1, EV2 and EV2/EV1 values
  • Test location log
  • Summary report

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the EV2/EV1 ratio tell me?

A low ratio suggests a well-compacted layer; a high ratio suggests more compaction is needed.

Is it the same as a CBR test?

No. EV2 measures stiffness; CBR measures penetration resistance.
